About Code Newbie
In the beginning, when newsgroups dominated interaction regarding problem solving, most forums on the web had inherited the brute tone from the newsgroups where the supportive base consisted of individuals who wouldn't even lower them selves to answer a simple newbie question.
A few users found this turn disturbing, and as the web started spurting forum based sites, where every question regarding Operating Systems was being handled, (remember this was the era of "In the year 2002 linux will overtake the desktop") two inspirational members decided it was time to create a special place for the programming community.
So as 2000 was about to have it's buffer overrun and flip to 2001, it also gave birth to Code Newbie, where the founder revolution and a fellow member bdl were passionate in spreading the spirit of Code Newbie who's mantra has always been to be a programming community for everyone. That means providing a forum where anyone, newbie or not, can feel comfortable posting programming related question without any drama.
As the site grew some users complained about the dull postnuke theme as well as the lack of being able to post articles, (at that time they were called NUMs, Newbie User Manuals) something needed to be done with the architecture. Member sde, a wizard of web development, offered his assistance and took the site in as if it was his newborn.
As time flew by, revolution and bdl found themselves more occupied with worklife and life in general, which brought revolution to the conclusion there wasn't any more time for Code Newbie, thus in order to keep Code Newbie moving forward he decided to turn over the site to sde around 2002 and went on to pursue other things. (You are missed rev)
Sde put alot of effort into trying out different designs which all just didn't seem quite right, until the day Stan, our mascot, was born. From that moment on Code Newbie felt complete. Not only did we have a mascot but it was something the community itself had created and named.
Over the years sde has been working hard on making this site a real treat for the users, which includes several updates to our article system. As the demise of other forums started to gain speed in early 2006, where virtualy every minor forum was merged with the larger ones, he decided not to let Code Newbie falter to that fate, and has kept it true to its essence.
You might ask yourself, "is Code Newbie the place for me"? Yes! Support can be found for everybody from the first time user with the bare minimum of coding experience to the guru who is in dear need for the decisive correction for the program at hand. This community is respectful and no one should feel embarrassed to ask even the most simple question.
Here at Code Newbie, we encourage the community to welcome new users with open arms. We try to ensure, regardless of the problem the user might have at hand, the answer will be formed as polite and easy to understand as possible. When you're trying to get the grasp of something new, the last thing you need is someone telling you how clumsy you are and how l33t they are for telling you that.
As Code Newbie began to evolve, users stepped up to the challenge and lead the way. One of the earliest members redhead has been a true supporter as a moderator and forum contributor. He has helped out with new features, and recently was involved in porting the non forum areas of the site over to Drupal. That included migrating all the articles as well as a lot of this content you're reading now!
Other honorable mentions would be to Belisarius for his moderation role here and all the help he has given to fellow Java programmers. DJMaze has been around since 2005 and will always have top notch advice with a no B.S. style in the PHP and a few other forums. Valmont has contributed many articles and has helped many of users over in the C/C++ forums.
There are many others over the years who are not mentioned here and it is every one of them who have also made Code Newbie the community it is today.
So, if you haven't already, sign up, comment on and rate some articles, post your own, and join the conversation in the forums!
